Victoriaville, August 12, 2022 – The fairways of Club de golf Victoriaville held no secrets for Jake Scott and Keven Fortin-Simard on Friday during the second round of the Sani-Marc – Fenergic Canada Cup, presented by the City of Victoriaville. Both athletes were simply dominant, recording rounds of 63 (-9) to move to the top of the provisional overall standings.
Adjustments on the greens were the key for Jake Scott, who made seven birdies and an eagle in the second round of the tournament. "I also played really well yesterday to start the tournament at -6 (66), but I missed some key putts. I worked hard after my round to put it all back together and it showed in my game today," said the veteran golfer from Ohio who finds himself in the driver's seat at -15 (129).
In addition to excelling with his putter, the American was able to avoid trouble in the difficult sections of the course and ended his day without any bogeys. An impressive performance, of course, but impossible without perfect round management.
"I started on the back nine which is pretty tough here, especially the last five holes. I was able to play well on those holes and that kept the momentum going. I hit the ball very well and I also putted well, but I would say that I managed my game well to execute in all circumstances," analyzed the man who has a two-shot lead over the other star of the day, Keven Fortin-Simard of Québec.
The latter put on quite a show for the crowd watching the last golfers finish their rounds, making his eighth birdie of the day to consolidate his provisional second place at -13 (131).
"It's always fun to have a good day and convert it," he said as he left the course. "I would say it was a continuation of my last nine yesterday. I was able to get into a rhythm and really hit the ball better. Plus, I was really accurate on everything around the greens, so that helps a lot."
The Saguenay native, who now plays golf part-time, will take advantage of the next few hours to rest with his loved ones, after which he will be able to prepare for a showdown with Jake Scott, which will begin at noon on Friday.
"It's going to be fun! I'm going to visit my family tonight and go back to my daily routine for a few hours. It's going to feel good and tomorrow I'll be having a blast! I'm here for the win and, hopefully, I'll give myself a chance to be at the top of the game, so that's cool," he concluded, grinning from ear to ear.
The leading duo will have to keep an eye out for Noah Steele of Ontario, who sits alone in third at -10 (134). Max Gilbert (Saint-Georges) and Étienne Papineau (Pinegrove) follow at -8 (136), in a group of four competitors tied for ninth place.
At the end of the day, this Friday, no less than 21 of the 66 representatives from Québec made the cut set at 144 (E). They will advance to the weekend's rounds in which a total of 72 participants will tee off.
Francis Rouillier, three-time champion of the event in the amateur division, will be part of the field and will attempt to defend the title he won in 2021. After the first two days of competition, the host club golfer is second in the category at -1 (143), two strokes behind compatriot Brandon Rattray (Saint-Bruno, -3).
A total of $125,000, including $25,000 for the winner, will be awarded at the end of the Sani-Marc – Fenergic Canada Cup, the largest independent tournament for Canadian professional golfers from the tours associated with the event: Vancouver Golf Tour, Great Lakes Tour, Toronto Players Tour, East Coast Pro Tour, PGA of Québec, PGA of Canada, and Golf Québec.
Admission is free throughout the tournament for spectators who wish to experience the unique atmosphere of this competition. It is also possible to follow all the action live on Golf Zoogle's YouTube platform.
